Fedora 15

So the beta of Fedora 15 is out some time, and in 5 days the release will be there. Normally I don’t fancy Fedora (or any other Linux distribution) as my desktop. I play games and for that I need Windows. Besides that I browse and I watch video’s.

Both work fine on Windows, hell browsing works even better on Windows then on Linux (Silverlight for example).

And besides that Gnome was a very bad ripoff of the Windows95 look and feel.

Well Fedora 15, and Gnome 3 has changed a lot.

One of the biggest changes I noticed was no inittab, it has moved to systemd now. And the default runlevel is now set by a symbolic link (/etc/systemd/system/default.target).

But the biggest change for me came with gnome 3, it’s not a windows ripoff anymore but they decided to do things different. No longer there is a “start menu”. They made it easier to access application with the keyboard. A bit like Windows 7 has: Press windows key -> Enter application name -> press enter, and the application starts. This is possible on Gnome as well now.

You have a a small task notifier in the bottom right corner which comes visible if you hover over it. The system notifier is in the bottom of the screen and comes visible as soon as there is a message.

The biggest disadvantage that I could find is the title bar of applications. First of all I find it way too big, and by default there is no minimize button. This is easily solved by installing gnome-tweak-tool and in this application you can select what buttons must be visible.

Other disadvantage is the system requirements, for gnome 3 you definitely need some cpu and video power. I don’t say you need the best of the best. But for example my ION with 4GB memory was a bit too slow for it actually. It works but just not as smooth. Although I’m running it on a resolution of 1920 x 1200.

I find Fedora 15 with GNOME 3 worthy as my desktop now. So whenever I’m not playing a game I start my laptop (lower power consumption as well) and use Fedora Core to work on :)

Anyways try to check this GNOME 3 / Fedora 15 Test Drive.
